Document Details : Title: Ignatian Dimensions of Rahner's Theology Author(s): GALLAGHER, M.P. Journal: Louvain Studies Volume: 29 Issue: 1-2 Date: Spring-Summer 2004 Pages: 77-91 DOI: 10.2143/LS.29.1.505248 Abstract : This article explores the influence of St. Ignatius of Loyola on Rahner’s theology, and especially on his sense of the experience of God. Where Ignatius was original in giving attention to inner movements of consolation and desolation, Rahner highlights self-transcendence as openness to grace and orientation to God as mystery. The paper studies a number of Rahner’s texts from different decades to show how the Ignatian dimension changed with the years and came into more explicit expression in the later stages of Rahner’s career. His interpretation of Ignatius may not always satisfy the experts in that school of spirituality, but remained a crucial strand in his effort to respond spiritually and pastorally to the faith crisis of his culture. |
