Whatever the terminal date of Caesar's Gallic command, of far greater importance is Caesar's obsession with a seamless transition from his provinces to a second consulship. Everyone knew his ruthlessness: it was memories of 59 BC which made his enemies determined to allow him no second chance. How, then, can we explain what happened? To ask the question more pointedly, exactly what did Caesar's enemies think that he would do in January 49 BC? |
