More particularly, since the revival of the Griesbach hypothesis in the 1960's the relative order of pericopes in the first three gospels is one of the central questions in the new debate. David J. Neville (Perth, Western Australia) has written a comprehensive historical survey of the discussion, with critical analysis of the pertinent literature up to 1989. His book is divided into three parts. 1. The origin of an argument from order: J.J. Griesbach, K. Lachmann; 2. The role of the arguments from order within the developing consensus in English-speaking synoptic criticism, 1890-1924: F.H. Woods, W.C. Allen and J.C. Hawkins, H.G. Jameson and J.F. Springer (two voices of dissent), B.H. Streeter; 3. The reassessment of arguments from order and the reopening of the synoptic problem: B.C. Butler (H.G. Wood, G.M. Styler), W.R. Farmer, C.M. Tuckett. The book concludes with a recapitulation (223-226) and the identification of “Issues relevant for analyzing the phenomenon of order” (226-237). |
