Abstract :
The Clavis Patrum Latinorum (CPL) by E. Dekkers is the standard repertory of the editions of Patristic authors and writings from Tertullian to Bede. It was first published in 1951 as volume 3 of the yearbook Sacris Erudiri (CPL I) and revised and updated ten years later (CPL II). CPL was meant as a Prolegomenon to the Corpus Christianorum Series Latina (CCSL= CC) which Dekkers had been planning for several years. The Claviswas the result of the inventarisation of Early Christian Latin literature which was undertaken independently by E. Gaar († 1953) in Vienna and by Dekkers in the abbey of Steenbrugge. After they got informed of each other's work they decided to cooperate. The importance of Gaar's contribution is duly recognized in the Preface (CPL I, p. XIII = III, p. XI). The third edition appeared in 1995 in a new and larger typesetting. CPL III is an extra volume of CC and it can be regarded as a companion volume to this prestigious series of editions.
