Document Details : Title: The Martyrdom of Polycarp and the Outbreak of Montanism Author(s): DEHANDSCHUTTER, B. Journal: Ephemerides Theologicae Lovanienses Volume: 75 Issue: 4 Date: Dec. 1999 Pages: 430-437 DOI: 10.2143/ETL.75.4.504770 Abstract : The Martyrdom of Polycarp (MartPol) has fascinated scholarship more than once. But how moving the Letter of the Smyrneans on their bishop’s death may be, only editions and/or annotated translations did appear. Up to now there was no thorough treatment of the text in the form of a commentary of considerable extent. This gap has been filled by the sixth volume of the series Kommentar zu den Apostolischen Vätern. Gerd Buschmann, the author of this voluminous study, published already in 1994 a book on MartPol, which was based on his dissertation of 1991 (Hamburg). The present commentary continues in an excellent way Buschmann’s research. Its publication is like an invitation to update my own views on MartPol after twenty years. |
