Document Details : Title: The Book of Elchasai in its Relevance for Manichaean Institutions Subtitle: with a supplement: The Book of Elchasai Reconstructed and translated Author(s): JONES, S.F. Journal: ARAM Periodical Volume: 16 Date: 2004 Pages: 176-215 DOI: 10.2143/ARAM.16.0.504679 Abstract : This paper asks about the origin of certain specific religious impulses and institutional patterns in Manichaeism. It proceeds from the insight, established since the decipherment of the Greek biography of Mani, that Mani's basic religious education was in an Elchasaite Christian Community. Thus, to explain the central features of teh institutional formation of Manichaeism, this paper looks to Mai's specific religious background in early Aramaic-speaking Christianity. |
