Document Details : Title: An Armenian Philosophical Compendium Manuscript in Southern California Author(s): COWE, S.P. Journal: Le Muséon Volume: 117 Issue: 1-2 Date: 2004 Pages: 107-129 DOI: 10.2143/MUS.117.1.504579 Abstract : This article discusses a significant Armenian manuscript of the 17th century now in the possession of the Der-Boghosian family of Los Angeles. It offers a detailed physical description of the document treating issues such as binding, scribal colophons, illuminations, and evaluation of its state of preservation. It then reviews the contents, primarily devoted to the corpus of David the Invincible, pupil of Olympiodoros at the School of Alexandria, as well as the subsidiary units, of which the most important is the Dialectica of Bartolomeo da Poggio, first incumbent of the Dominican see of Maragha in the 1320s, who played a major role in familiarizing the Armenians with Latin theology and ritual. Comparison with other similar codices clarifies the manuscript's typology in combining the Armenian legacy from the Late Antique Neoplatonic tradition with medieval Thomist thought. The article concludes with a review of the manuscript's history, in so far as this can be reconstructed from internal and external evidence. |
