Two main positions, however, can be identified – either the psalmist or his enemies: either the psalm in its entirety is direct speech or direct speech embodying a report (vv. 6-19). Arguments presented by scholars for each of the two interpretations have not been conclusive and have been based primarily on linguistic analysis. The case presentation analysis undertaken here most probably offers further insights to the understanding of the cause, context, content and aim of the psalm. It argues that Ps 109 has a legal court setting and runs on as a presentation of a defense case rather than an expression of evil wishes against the enemy. It transpires that it is only when vv. 6-19 are seen as a report (quotation) that Ps 109 really fits into its genre as lament and as prayer. |
