Document Details : Title: Palestinian Christianity in The Spiritual Meadow of John Moschos Author(s): PENKETT, Pachomios (Robert) Journal: ARAM Periodical Volume: 15 Date: 2003 Pages: 173-184 DOI: 10.2143/ARAM.15.0.504533 Abstract : The author examines what The Spiritual Meadow teaches us about Palestinian monasticism, especially in the light of Cyril of Scythopolis' Lives of the Monks of Palestine. Two distinctive characteristics of Palestinian monasticism can be deduced from Cyril's Lives, namely 1) the desert of Juda that encouraged a specific kind of eremetic life, and 2) Jerusalem itself, that fostered a special type of relationship between monk and city. Contrary to the opinion formulated elsewhere, it seems that these two characteristics did continue after Cyril's death, and that they were referred to by John Moschos. |
