Journal: ARAM Periodical Volume: 15 Date: 2003 Pages: 159-171 DOI: 10.2143/ARAM.15.0.504532 Abstract : Palestinian monasticism in the fifth and sixth centuries can be characterised by the emergence of outstanding monastic figures dedicated to the ascetic ideal, and also by the incidence of theological disputes. The undercurrent of heresy resulted in the assumption by Severus of Antioch of the important role of monastic exemplar and defender of the faith, both during his time in Palestine, and later during his exile in Egypt. As shown, however, these attributes were instigated and stimulated by the unique circumstances of his education and youthful experiences, and importantly by his contact with Palestinian monasticism. |
