Document Details : Title: Chronological, Functional and Spatial Aspects in Lamp Studies Subtitle: The Roman Bath Lamps, BEY 045 Author(s): MIKATI, Rima Journal: ARAM Periodical Volume: 13 Date: 2001-2002 Pages: 281-292 DOI: 10.2143/ARAM.13.0.504503 Abstract : The Lebanese-British team (AUB-ACRE) undertook between 1994 and 1996 three rescue excavations in Beirut's Central District. In 1996, Bey 045 revealed several sections of a large Roman bath. The excavation of the Roman bath site produced 115 lamps, both fragmentary and complete. The examination of the material has revealed that 44,7 % of the recorded lamps were of types dated to the second and third centuries. This observation along with the evidence of several phases of reconstruction of the bath during this period, drove the author to question the nature of this group of lamps and its relation to its stratigraphic location. The article emphasizes the contribution of the lamps in understanding the spatial and functional aspects of archaeological evidence. |
