Document Details : Title: A 17th Century Glossary of Mandaic Author(s): BORGHERO, Roberta Journal: ARAM Periodical Volume: 11 Issue: 2 Date: 1999-2000 Pages: 311-319 DOI: 10.2143/ARAM.11.2.504471 Abstract : The article concerns the attribution of a handwritten glossary in Mandaic, Arabic, Latin, Turkish and Persian, which is now kept in the Leiden University Library. Since texts such as glossaries, dictionaries and grammars were generally written by missionaries, the presence of Mandaic in the manuscript could be evidence of its belonging to the circle of Catholic missions among Mandaeans. The author of the Leiden manuscript is probably to be sought in a group of missionaries of the order of the Discalced Carmelites, working in Iraq (Basra) since 1623. Most likely it was the Italian Matteo di San Giuseppe who wrote the glossary. |
