Document Details : Title: Syriac Writers from Beth Qaṭraye Author(s): BROCK, Sebastian Journal: ARAM Periodical Volume: 11 Date: 1999-2000 Pages: 85-96 DOI: 10.2143/ARAM.11.1.504452 Abstract : Although the presence of Syriac Christianity in Beth Qaṭraye is attested for some five hundred years, from the fourth to the ninth century, those known to have been writers are all concentrated on the seventh century. This probably implies the presence at that time somewhere in Beth Qaṭraye of one or more church/monastery schools whose teaching was on the level of higher education, and thus comparable to that of the famous School of Nisibis. Several of the writers of Beth Qaṭraye were widely read. Of all the known Syriac writers from Beth Qaṭraye, Isaac of Niniveh was the most influential, and no other Syriac writer, not even Ephrem, has been translated into so many different languages. |
