Document Details : Title: De geschiedenis van uitgeverij Album Author(s): STILLER, Louis Journal: Spiegel der Letteren Volume: 45 Issue: 4 Date: 2003 Pages: 391-402 DOI: 10.2143/SDL.45.4.504224 Abstract : In this document Louis Stiller, co-founder of the publishing company Album, describes the rise and downfall of the first exclusively electronic publisher in the Netherlands. He recalls early hypertext experiments in Apple’s Hypercard and explains how influences as diverse as Italo Calvino’s ‘The Literature Machine’ and Miller’s adventure game Myst pushed him towards hypertext theory. Album published cd-roms, floppy discs, and websites with ‘electric tales’ from 1995 to 1997: stories, poems and plays in images, sound, text and movement. Stiller’s story is about idealism, initial success (e.g. with Schaman gaat voor goud [Schaman goes for gold]), but also about the difficulty to penetrate the book market with cd-roms and about financial margins that were too small to keep the enterprise afloat. |
