Reading understandingly implies, among other things, that the readers gain some encyclopaedic competence. This is an expression characteristic of Eco’s semiosis, which belongs within the semantic school (the so-called “second generation”). This approach sustains that neither isolated words nor sentences carry enough semantic indicators for the readers to visualise all the elements of the whole communicative act they are part of, and to actualise the virtual meanings that are most warranted by the context. Or, so as Pierce upholds, a word is a virtual text with inchoative meanings and a text is the expansion of one or more of those possible meanings. The study of words, sentences and context belongs therefore to the (re)production of meaning in and through the writing-reading process. Re-producing meaning has to do with a visualisation that makes reference to a context, re-creating a virtual image, situation or world in one’s own mind. |
