Document Details : Title: Piracy, Ransom, Slavery and Trade. French participation in the liberation of Ottoman slaves from Malta during the 1620s Author(s): FODOR, Pál Journal: Turcica Volume: 33 Date: 2001 Pages: 119-134 DOI: 10.2143/TURC.33.0.483 Abstract : This paper is a study of the Maltese piratical economy, that is of the capture and ransoming of Ottoman subjects and of the political and commercial interests underlying such transactions. It is based on a series of documents kept in the Paris National Library. This collection, which in all probability belonged to Jean Dupuy (French consul in Izmir from 1626 to 1651), allows us to describe a commercial phenomenon till now unknown: the existence of commercial societies specialized in the redemption of captives. |
