Document Details : Title: Het boekenbezit van Jan Frans Willems, Prudens van Duyse en Philippe Marie Blommaert Author(s): PAUWELS, Jan Journal: Spiegel der Letteren Volume: 42 Issue: 3-4 Date: 2000 Pages: 259-295 DOI: 10.2143/SDL.42.3.408 Abstract : Due to a general lack of interest in Dutch literary history in the rare public libraries, the nineteenth century Flemish philologists, Jan Frans Willems (1793-1846), Prudens van Duyse (1805-1859) and Philippe Marie Blommaert (1808-1871), were forced to build their own collections of manuscripts and books on the topic. Therefore, an analysis of the context and contents of their private libraries could contribute to a better understanding of the literary practice of early Flemish philologists. By means of a critical examination of book auction catalogues and relating documents (such as correspondence, library acquisition records, …) this article presents a reconstruction of the libraries and the historical context in which they were built. |
