Abstract :
Long dismissed as a derivative translation, De getrouwe herderin (1719) by Katharina Johanna de With (1691-1728) in fact reveals a carefully staged act of literary self-positioning. Situated between a translation and an adaptation of Francesco Contarini’s La fida ninfa, this pastoral play marked the Utrecht poet’s entry into the literary world. Like many early modern translations by women, the work has received little sustained scholarly attention, leaving De With largely marginalised in literary history. This article reconsiders De getrouwe herderin as a strategic site of authorship by examining the mechanisms of ‘relational authority’ through which De With positioned herself. Moving beyond approaches that privilege the relationship between source text and translation, it shows how De With mobilises a broader network of references, including an earlier translation, paratexts, and material features of the publication. Through a multilayered analysis of source texts, paratextual strategies, and translational and poetic choices, this article argues that the construction of relational authority can operate across textual, intertextual, and material levels. In doing so, it not only repositions De With as a self-conscious author, but also contributes to the recent revaluation of early modern translation practices, especially with regard to women’s authorship.
