Document Details : Title: De noodzaak van eenvoudig kijken Subtitle: K. Schippers' kunstkritiek in de 'gouden' jaren van de culturele journalistiek in Nederland, 1970-1980 Author(s): WINKLER, Marieke Journal: Spiegel der Letteren Volume: 68 Issue: 1 Date: 2026 Pages: 1-32 DOI: 10.2143/SDL.68.1.3295747 Abstract : This article re-examines the art criticism of Dutch author K. Schippers (1936-2021), specifically his first collection of cultural essays, De berg en de steenfabriek (1986), within the context of cultural journalism’s rise in the Netherlands during the 1970s-1980s. First, it reconstructs the principal extratextual developments within the art critical field during the so-called ‘golden’ years of art criticism, highlighting the central dynamics between creative, journalistic and academic art critics. The article then offers an intratextual analysis of Schippers’ art criticism collected in De berg en de steenfabriek (1986), examining the transformation from newspaper to book. The analysis provides new insights into the programmatic function of Schippers’ favored narrative form, the pilgrimage, and the recurring motif of the grotesque. Ultimately, the article contends that both aspects should be understood not only strategically, as a means to position himself vis-à-vis formalist or academic critics, but also intrinsically as they reflect Schipper’s phenomenological approach towards art and the senses, and allude to the metaphysical aspirations present throughout his literary oeuvre. |
