Abstract :

The polystratic conception of the work of art is generally associated with the name of the phenomenologist Roman Ingarden, who made it the core of his ontology of the work of art. Nevertheless, another philosopher, the Prague-born Emil Utitz, tried before him to describe and elaborate the specific «objectality» of the work of art, highlighting the different layers through which it takes form. The article presents these two conceptions, that of Utitzian allgemeine Kunstwissenschaft and that of Ingardenian phenomenology, highlighting their affinities and points of divergence based on the complex relationship subject-object-world. Finally, the article shows how Patočka’s critical reading of Ingarden allows us to deepen the relationship between phenomenology and Kunstwissenschaft.
