August Schmarsow, a major figure in German art science (Kunstwissenschaft), and particularly in the project of Dessoir and Utitz for a general science of art (allgemeine Kunstwissenschaft), is best known for his idea of «spatial configuration» or «spatialization» (Raumgestaltung). Initially inspired by the psychophysical theories of Vischer, Lipps, Wundt, and Semper, Schmarsow’s conception of spatialization developed – particularly in reaction to the formalism of Wölfflin and Riegl – into a complex theory of the relationship between body and space. In the arts, this relationship unfolds both through internalization and rhythmization (the appropriation of space – for example, architectural space – by the moving body) and through externalization and expressive gesture (the outward representation of the body and its position in space, as in sculpture and painting). Schmarsow himself linked this theory of spatialization to Scheler’s anthropology, and many commentators have further related it to the work of Stumpf and especially Husserl on the constitution of space – thus suggesting the possibility and relevance of a phenomenological interpretation. Drawing in particular on the broader encounter between art science and phenomenological aesthetics within the Zeitschrift für Ästhetik und allgemeine Kunstwissenschaft, this article explores the modalities of Schmarsow’s dialogue with phenomenology, as well as the original perspectives it opens up – especially at the intersection of other aesthetic and phenomenological approaches to the body and space. |
