Document Details : Title: On the Possibility of the Terengganu Stone Inscriptions Being Influenced by the Sogdian Language Author(s): XIAOXUE, Sun , AHMAD ZAKARIA, Ros Mahwati Journal: Iranica Antiqua Volume: 60 Date: 2025 Pages: 225-239 DOI: 10.2143/IA.60.0.3295698 Abstract : The Sogdians, an ancient ethnic group, originally lived in the area of the Amu Darya and the Syr Darya rivers in Central Asia. They spoke Sogdian, the Eastern Iranian language. More importantly, they were active on the Silk Road, both on land and at sea, and were renowned in Eurasia for their business acumen. This article attempts to explore the relationship between the Sogdian script and the Terengganu stone inscriptions. The Sogdian materials used by the author are excavated from Xinjiang and Dunhuang Gansu of China, and also from some tombstone epigraphy in China. The inscriptions shown on the Tomb of Wirkak record a Sogdian immigrant businessman’s biography in the Northern Zhou dynasty and Sogdian Document No. 3 from Khotan, dated to the 8th century, is in a type of cursive Sogdian script. The author will examine the grapheme and script links of some specific characters between the two ancient writing systems by contrasting the scripts to demonstrate the influence of ancient Iranian scripts on the early Jawi inscriptions on the Terengganu stone. |
