Abstract :
The Zardouyan cemetery, located in the Mariwan valley of north-western Iran, reveals significant insights into Early Iron Age II (11th-10th century BCE) burial practices. Rescue excavations conducted in 2017 uncovered pithos burials, both single and double jar interments, as well as smaller vessels potentially used for cremations. Grave goods consist of portable ceramics. Petrographic analysis indicates local production of burial jars and associated courseware vessels. Carbon-14 dating of skeletal remains, supported by typological analysis of pottery, indicates the site’s early Iron Age II chronology. The cemetery’s layout, with low stone socle walls demarcating burial groups, reflects social organization plausibly based upon kinship. This study contributes to our understanding of societal structures and material culture in the central Zagros region during the Iron Age, reflecting unique local adaptations by an insular highland society.
