Document Details : Title: Filastrius's Account of the Hexaplaric Translations Subtitle: An Overlooked Parallel to Epiphanius Author(s): STEVENS, Luke J. , SETIÉN GARCÍA, Carla Journal: Journal of Septuagint and Cognate Studies Volume: 58 Date: 2025 Pages: 143-153 DOI: 10.2143/JSCS.58.0.3295597 Abstract : Filastrius’s Book of the Various Heresies devotes five entries (translated here) to those who would follow various Old Testament translations diverging from the Septuagint, in the course of which he recounts the Septuagint’s origin story and surveys the alternative Greek translations collated in Origen’s Hexapla. Although the information is compressed and sometimes distorted, it proves to be a noteworthy independent witness to the same lost text underlying the important subsequent parallels in Epiphanius’s Weights and Measures and the anonymous Dialogue of Timothy and Aquila. A new explanation is offered for the reputed translations by 'the thirty' and 'the six', and potential implications are highlighted regarding the Hexapla’s anonymous translations, including the obscure Septima. |
