Ziegler, the siglum Tht. in the apparatus refers to the biblical lemmata as they appear in Theodoret of Cyrrhus’ Commentary on the Twelve Prophets, edited by J L. Schulze in 1770 and reprinted in the Patrologia Graeca (PG 81, 1545-1988). Schulze’s edition is itself based on, and modifies, the earlier edition by J. Sirmond (1642). A comparison between the manuscript tradition of the commentaries on Hosea and Joel and the editions of Sirmond and Schulze shows that these editors frequently printed the biblical lemmata in a form different from what was originally found in Theodoret’s commentary. In some cases, they relied on manuscript sources that were occasionally faulty; in others, they deliberately altered the biblical lemmata they had in front of them. Another source of error lies in Ziegler’s occasional misinterpretation of Schulze’s layout and notes. This article provides a list of corrections to Ziegler’s apparatus regarding variants attributed to Theodoret, identifying the source of each error. These corrections will allow for a more accurate assessment of Theodoret’s testimony to the Lucianic text of Hosea and Joel. |
