This article first analyses the problem of the growing disconnection between church doctrine and its reception. Theology, situated within academic discourse and bearing social responsibility, must face the challenge of translating the inherited faith into the present and of protecting it from abusive instrumentalization. As a discipline capable of dialogue, transdisciplinary in scope and sensitive to context, theology is tasked with locating faith within a complex present and demonstrating its contemporary relevance. Dogmatics can offer both theology itself and the church as a community of tradition a soteriological focus, by which both may orient themselves. An orientation toward a soteriological horizon of hope correlates with an analysis of the present that emphasizes the need to keep the dignity of all human beings in view amid ecological, social, economic, cultural, and existential processes of transformation. Understanding soteriology as a criterion for ecclesial discernment and decision-making does not provide simple solutions to the problem of empty church buildings. It does, however, focus church doctrine on what moves people, taking up their concerns and needs in order to respond to them. Doctrine, understood in this way, enables its connection to real life to become visible once again and also has an impact on the synodal shaping of the Church. |
