The Liturgical Movement generated a wide range of possibilities for the celebration of Christian worship that have shaped liturgical development up to the present day. Using baptism as an example, various stages of reform can be illustrated. Pius Parsch, an Austrian representative of the movement, incorporated his concerns into both the theology and practice of baptism, for instance by advocating the promotion of baptismal awareness among all the faithful as the foundation of the common priesthood and thus of active participation in the liturgy. By linking scripture and liturgy, he emphasized the ecclesiological and sacramental character of baptism. His renewed understanding of the sacrament of baptism found concrete expression in proposals for the structuring of the liturgy, which – through changes in time and place – was to be brought back to the centre of the parish community’s liturgical life. His central demand that baptism move from being a private act to becoming a celebration of the entire community was recalled by the Second Vatican Council, but to this day it has only been realized in part. |
