Abstract :
In 1915, Émile Espérandieu published a decorated sigillata bowl, either Italic or 'Italo-Gauloise', found in the Roman uicus of Vertault (Côte-d’Or, France). The decoration is particularly original and is not included in published repertories. It depicts the transport of various objects on a cart pulled by a pair of oxen, guided by a peasant dressed in a cucullus who stands at the back. Espérandieu considered it a rural carriage, but nothing more. No identification has since been proposed for this iconographic hapax, which would probably be linked to the ideological policy of Augustus and his Virgilian glorification of the peasant world.
