Document Details : Title: An Attempt to Identify Ostia's Honorary duouiri of 126 CE and their Prefects in the Fasti Ostienses Author(s): BRUUN, Christer Journal: Latomus Volume: 84 Issue: 4 Date: 2025 Pages: 692-712 DOI: 10.2143/LAT.84.4.3295506 Abstract : This article analyses a particular passage in the Fasti Ostienses, the annual chronicle inscribed on stone in Rome’s port. The chronicle informs us that in 126 CE the emperor Hadrian and a hitherto unidentified colleague of his were honorary duouiri (chief magistrates) of the town. Since honorary duouiri were never expected to manage day-to-day business, they were always replaced by praefecti. To hold such a prefecture was a great local honour, and particularly so when replacing the emperor or his colleague. The entry in the Fasti Ostienses is unfortunately very incompletely preserved, and while scholars have presented a well-founded suggestion for the first prefect, the other remains unknown. Proposals for both the second honorary duouir and the second praefectus are here presented by singling out members of the senatorial gens Arria and the gens Larcia as likely holders of these positions. |
