They mainly regard the order of the pericopes read on Sundays, which follows an incomprehensible logic. This article aims to investigate the liturgical rules that govern the order of these readings and to make them understandable. When, by whom, and above all, why were they formulated? Are those rules the result of practical necessity, theological reflection, or hazard? Could we discern between a well-reasoned choice and an error made by a copyist who mixed information without understanding it? The article discusses those rules based on the oldest preserved manuscripts. The investigation of the causes of their appearance opens the door to several other questions about the formation of the Byzantine calendar and the beginning of the liturgical year. |
