Document Details : Title: The Structure of Seneca's Epistulae morales and the Construction of the Addressee Author(s): BERRENS, Dominik Journal: Latomus Volume: 84 Issue: 3 Date: 2025 Pages: 438-452 DOI: 10.2143/LAT.84.3.3295225 Abstract : Despite its prominence, the structure of Seneca’s Epistulae morales continues to be a subject of ongoing debate. The article underlines the significance of the book divisions and illustrates the internal organisation of individual books, with a specific focus on Book 5. Examining the construction of the addressee, Lucilius, brings to light additional structural elements. Lucilius is initially portrayed as a somewhat elusive figure to make the correspondence more accessible to a wider readership and to enable them to apply Seneca’s advice to their own lives. It is only at certain points in the corpus, notably towards the conclusion of Book 2 and in Book 5, that he becomes more distinctly delineated as an individual. |
