Document Details : Title: The Influence of Richard Kilvington's Commentary on the Physics on the Anonymous Treatise De sex inconvenientibus Author(s): JUNG, Elżbieta , PAPIERNIK, Joanna Journal: Recherches de Théologie et Philosophie Médiévales Volume: 92 Issue: 2 Date: 2025 Pages: 411-436 DOI: 10.2143/RTPM.92.2.3295164 Abstract : The anonymous 14th-century treatise De sex inconvenientibus (DSI), recently critically edited, has deepened our understanding of the Oxford Calculators’ intellectual tradition. This work addresses core issues in natural philosophy – generation, alteration, augmentation, and local motion – using logic and mathematics to resolve inconsistencies. While referencing prominent Oxford thinkers such as Thomas Bradwardine and William Heytesbury, the treatise omits mention of Richard Kilvington, a key figure among the Calculators. Nonetheless, significant textual evidence, including linguistic parallels, shared arguments, and verbatim citations, demonstrates DSI’s reliance on Kilvington’s Questions on the Physics (1326). By comparing Kilvington’s commentary with DSI’s structure and arguments, this article reveals the substantial influence of Kilvington’s work on the anonymous treatise, further elucidating the interconnectedness and evolution of ideas within the Oxford Calculators’ milieu. |
