The key issue in the debate that ensued was the question of whether a number is an entity distinct from the numbered things. Henry of Ghent was one of the first Parisian thinkers in the Theology Faculty to have tackled this issue explicitly. His view proved to be extremely influential but also equally controversial. Henry advances a largely reductionist view of number, on which a number does not add any new form over and above the form of the continuum out of whose division it arose. This paper provides the first analysis and assessment of Henry’s position as well as its later critical reception. |
