Document Details : Title: Some Thoughts on Paestum 6193 Subtitle: The Sagon Plate Author(s): HERRING, Edward Journal: Ancient West & East Volume: 24 Date: 2025 Pages: 319-328 DOI: 10.2143/AWE.24.0.3295124 Abstract : In 1955, a red-figure plate (Paestum 6193) was discovered in Tomb 95 at the Andriuolo-Laghetto cemetery at Paestum. In most ways, the plate is unremarkable. The form is not that common in Paestan red-figure, but the decoration – a female head in profile – most certainly is. What distinguishes the plate is that a man’s name is painted across the woman’s neck. The discrepancy between the male gender of the name and the female image has previously been noted, but not explained. This paper reviews the evidence and offers some tentative interpretations of this seeming anomaly. |
