Abstract :
The southern shore of Lake Van is a predominantly mountainous area that has been little investigated from an archaeological perspective. Among the sites there is a fortress known locally as Hişet, north of the modern town of Gevaş, located on a high hill almost in front of the island of Akhtamar. This paper presents the first overall study of the site’s architecture and pottery. Notably, one of the few sculptures attributed to the Urartian period is also said to originate from this location. The site was occupied during the Urartian, Arsacid and mediaeval periods (Seljuk and Ottoman); it probably corresponds to the ancient royal residence known as (V)ostan Ṛshtuniatsʻ, in the Rshtunik canton of the historical Armenian region of Vaspurakan.
