Document Details : Title: Through or around Edom Subtitle: Diverging Paths in Biblical Narrative Author(s): KUGLER, Gili Journal: Biblica Volume: 106 Issue: 3 Date: 2025 Pages: 344-363 DOI: 10.2143/BIB.106.3.3295077 Abstract : Two contrasting narratives recount Israel’s encounter with Edom before entering the land. In Numbers 20, a military threat from Edom forces the Israelites to detour, extending their journey around Edom. In contrast, Deuteronomy 2 presents Israel’s passage through Edom as part of God’s broader plan for international relations. While these accounts do not necessarily depict sequential historical events, their stark differences in details and terminology diminish the likelihood of direct textual dependence. Instead, the two narratives offer alternative responses to a shared geopolitical reality, reflecting distinct ideologies concerning territorial rights, national legitimacy, and divine agency in international affairs. |
