A large number of medieval historians (Armenian, Arab, Syrian) report the first invasion of Cilicia by the Mamelukes and the events which preceded it. In addition, a certain number of scholars have mentioned these events in their research. In this article we try to examine various angles that have not merited sufficient attention until now. These are the factors which favored the success of the Mamelukes and the failure of Armenian kingdom. We consider such factors: 1) the internal conflicts in Cilicia; 2) the role of Sultanate of Iconium; and 3) the importance of Egyptian espionage. Whereas the battle of ‘Ayn Djālūt marked the beginning of a half-century of Mameluke-Mongol struggle for Greater Syria, Mari marked the prelude to a long series of incursions that ultimately brought about the fall of the last Armenian kingdom. The works of 13th-14th centuries historians Grigor of Akner, Smbat Sparapet, Kirakos of Ganjak, Vahram of Edessa (Rabuni), Gregory Bar Hebraeus, Ibn Abd al-Zahir and al-Younini were particularly useful for this study. |
