Document Details : Title: Step'anos Ōrbēlean et l'inscription de l'église Surb-Karapet de Noravank Author(s): AUGÉ, Isabelle , OUZOUNIAN, Agnès Journal: Revue des Études Arméniennes Volume: 43 Date: 2025 Pages: 301-340 DOI: 10.2143/REA.43.0.3295027 Abstract : Step‘anos Ōrbēlean, a 13th century historian of the Siwnik‘ province, included a number of documents, deeds and inscriptions in his chronicle. The aim of this article is to compare the two versions of the same deed written by Step‘anos Ōrbēlean himself. Chapter 71 of his chronicle contains a long text of testamentary value, another version of which can be found in the form of a monumental inscription in the Surb-Karapet Church at Noravank‘. The transcription of the text of this inscription, published in Volume III of the Corpus of Armenian Inscriptions, has been revised and translated here, as has the translation of the deed from the chronicle. The two versions are paralleled not only linguistically, but also in terms of their content, in an attempt to identify the historian’s use of the sources, and the relationships that may exist between the archival documents, now lost – but which undoubtedly existed and certainly served as a prototype –, the inscriptions, and the quotations reproduced in the historiographical sources. |
