Document Details : Title: Sur l'histoire du complexe ecclésiastique de Zuart'noc' Author(s): GARIBIAN, Nazénie Journal: Revue des Études Arméniennes Volume: 43 Date: 2025 Pages: 215-246 DOI: 10.2143/REA.43.0.3295024 Abstract : The mother church of Zuart‘noc‘ – St. Gregory, built, together with its ecclesiastical complex, between 643-661, is one of the most studied medieval Armenian monuments. The research and the numerous publications devoted to it have a century-old history. However, the monument continues to focus the attention of scolars who seek to deepen the research and put forward new hypotheses concerning, among others, the name, typology, and sculpted decoration of the church, as well as its archaeological setting. The paper explores the historical context in which the architectural complex of Zuart‘noc‘ was created, questioning the primary sources and the archaeological data. The author proposes some new interpretations regarding the dating, the reasons for the foundation and the circumstances of the consecration of this complex, which was to serve as a patriarchal see. |
