Document Details : Title: Fragments mal connus de l'enluminure du Vaspurakan Author(s): VARDANYAN, Edda Journal: Revue des Études Arméniennes Volume: 43 Date: 2025 Pages: 149-182 DOI: 10.2143/REA.43.0.3295022 Abstract : This article is devoted to two illuminated folios from an Armenian gospel. The fragments are attributed to manuscript production in the Berkri district of Vaspurakan, in the late 13th and early 14th centuries. The illuminations, which occupy both sides of each fragment, illustrate the final episodes of Christ’s life, including the Entombment with the Descent into Hell, Resurrection, Ascension, and a representation of the four evangelists grouped together. Despite an apparent uniformity in style and iconography among the manuscripts of the Berkri school, these fragments cannot be attributed to any known author. The illuminations reveal a close relationship and significant dependence on the apocryphal texts, while also highlighting the relationship between iconography, liturgical songs (ganj) and oral traditions. |
