Document Details : Title: The Root כאב and its Semantic Shifts Author(s): VERDE, Danilo Journal: Revue Biblique Volume: 133 Issue: 1 Date: 2026 Pages: 5-23 DOI: 10.2143/RBI.133.1.3294978 Abstract : Scholars agree that the root כאב conveys both physical and mental distress, with the exception of 2 Kgs 3:19 where it signifies 'to ruin'. These semantic shifts, however, remain unexplained hitherto. This paper contends that כאב usually foregrounds bodily affliction, and extends to inner suffering and even all-encompassing suffering due to metonymic processes that can be explained via recent research in pain studies and cognitive linguistics. In 2 Kgs 3:19, כאב should be rendered by 'to afflict', since this is a case of personification that the Blending Theory of metaphor helps to understand. Les chercheurs s’accordent à dire que la racine כאב exprime la souffrance physique et mentale, sauf en 2 Rois 3,19 où elle signifie «ruiner». Ces changements sémantiques restent inexpliqués. Cet article affirme que כאב met en avant l’affliction corporelle, s’étendant à la souffrance intérieure et globale via des processus métonymiques expliqués par les études récentes sur la douleur et la linguistique cognitive. En 2 Rois 3,19, כאב devrait être traduit par «affliger», puisqu’il s’agit d’un cas de personnification, compréhensible grâce à la théorie de l’intégration conceptuelle. |
