Document Details : Title: A Study on Syncretic Spaces Subtitle: Investigating Buddhist Remnants in the Islalmic Relic Traditions of Kashmir Author(s): ASHRAF DAR, Mohd Journal: Studies in Interreligious Dialogue Volume: 35 Issue: 1 Date: 2025 Pages: 31-48 DOI: 10.2143/SID.35.1.3294945 Abstract : The study of syncretic spaces, particularly in the context of Kashmir, reveals a complex interplay between Buddhist remnants and Islamic relic traditions. This paper argues that Buddhism was not completely ousted from Kashmir, where it existed for almost nine centuries; rather, some of its elements, like the relic tradition, were metamorphosed and still exist in the relic tradition (ziyarat) among the Muslims of Kashmir. Using historical, ethnographic, and comparative religious research methodologies, the present study endorses that the relic tradition in Kashmir is closer to Buddhism than to Hinduism and Islam. |
