Document Details : Title: The Ordianariate for the Faithful of Eastern Catholic Churches in Poland Author(s): TROJNAR, Wiktor P. Journal: Orientalia Christiana Periodica Volume: 91 Issue: 1 Date: 2025 Pages: 203-219 DOI: 10.2143/OCP.91.1.3294864 Abstract : This article examines the legal status of the ordinariate for the faithful of Eastern Catholic Churches in Poland within the broader context of the Catholic Church’s efforts to provide pastoral care for Eastern Catholics in the diaspora. The study begins by examining the juridical figure of ordinariates for Eastern Catholics, providing a general overview of their development and purpose. It then looks at the history of Eastern Catholic communities in Poland, with a particular focus on Catholic Armenians and the faithful of the Greek Catholic Church. The core of the research focuses on the origin and development of the ordinariate for Eastern Catholics in Poland, tracing its evolution from the period after the Second World War to the present day. Drawing on primary sources, the article examines the authority of the ordinary for Eastern Catholics in Poland, highlighting the unique nature of this jurisdiction and its relationship with both the Latin hierarchy and the Eastern Catholic Churches. Finally, it examines the internal organisation of the ordinariate and considers the pastoral challenges of serving a small but diverse community of Eastern Catholics in Poland. Through this comprehensive analysis, the article contributes to the understanding of how the Catholic Church adapts its structures to serve Eastern Catholics in predominantly Latin Catholic countries, and offers insights into the complexities of maintaining Eastern traditions within the wider Catholic community. |
