Document Details : Title: In Gabrielem Revisited Subtitle: The Sources of an Apocryphon, the Invention of Archelaos of Neapolis, and the Monastery of Romanos as a Symbol of Anti-Chalcedonian Identity Author(s): KRUEGER, Frederic Journal: Journal of Coptic Studies Volume: 27 Date: 2025 Pages: 209-222 DOI: 10.2143/JCS.27.0.3294759 Abstract : This study proposes a transmission sequence of a 'the saint is taken in by the abbot of the Palestinian Monastery of Romanos' episode from the Life of Severus of Antioch, via the Life of Archellides, to the pseudo-apostolic memoir In Gabrielem, contributing to the latter’s marked genre fluidity and its construction of a Miaphysite sacred topography that also includes Neapolis, of whose identification with Maiuma little doubt can remain. The naming of the fictional author, Archelaos of Neapolis, can be explained in the same context as a variation of the name Archellides, itself likely based on a character in its own principal source, the Greek Life of Xenophon. |
