Document Details : Title: Concelebration as an Essential Sign of Ecclesial Communion Author(s): VAHLING, Dominic Journal: Studia Canonica Volume: 59 Issue: 1 Date: 2025 Pages: 217-251 DOI: 10.2143/STC.59.1.3294725 Abstract : Sacramental concelebration of the Eucharist was one of the most significant liturgical restorations called for by the Second Vatican Council in Sacrosanctum concilium. The liturgical and juridical significance of concelebration has developed since the restoration of this ritual and the promulgation of the 1983 CIC. The recent controversies surrounding the apostolic letter Traditionis custodes of Pope Francis and its accompanying documents have brought new awareness to concelebration as a sign of ecclesial communion. The A. examines the development of canon 902, the purpose of concelebration, whether concelebration should be understood as an essential sign of ecclesial communion, a priest’s right to concelebrate (or not), and the challenges surrounding concelebration in the Church today, among these, whether priests who exclusively celebrate Mass according to the 1962 Missale Romanum can be compelled to concelebrate with the bishop at the Chrism Mass. La concélébration sacramentelle de l’Eucharistie a été l’une des restaurations liturgiques les plus importantes demandées par le Concile Vatican II dans Sacrosanctum concilium. La signification liturgique et juridique de la concélébration s’est développée depuis la restauration de ce rituel et la promulgation du CIC de 1983. Les récentes controverses autour de la lettre apostolique Traditionis custodes du pape François et des documents qui l’accompagnent ont fait prendre conscience que la concélébration est un signe de communion ecclésiale. L’A. examine le développement du canon 902, le but de la concélébration, la question de savoir si la concélébration doit être comprise comme un signe essentiel de la communion ecclésiale, le droit d’un prêtre de concélébrer (ou non), et les défis entourant la concélébration dans l’Église d’aujourd’hui, parmi lesquels la question de savoir si les prêtres qui célèbrent exclusivement la Messe selon le Missale Romanum de 1962 peuvent être contraints de concélébrer avec l’évêque lors de la Messe chrismale. |
