Document Details : Title: La Vie de Cyrille le Philéote (BHG 468) et le monastère Saint-Michel de Katasképè Subtitle: La promotion d'un modèle monastique? Author(s): CANTET-GUÉGUEN, Benoît Journal: Byzantion Volume: 94 Date: 2024 Pages: 139-169 DOI: 10.2143/BYZ.94.0.3294561 Abstract : This paper investigates how the Life of Cyril Phileotes (BHG 468) responds to the political and social context of the reign of Manuel I Komnenos. The author, Nikolaos Kataskepenos, was situated in the patriarchal milieu of Nikolaos Mouzalôn. Passages that depict the saint refuse donations of land by members of the aristocracy but accept gifts of money, inform us of the link between the Life and the monastic practices of the Kataskepe monastery. The Life of Cyril may have been written to promote this monastery, which was founded by the emperor, as a model. I argue that this programmatic function of the work and his monastery of Kataskepe were for Manuel ways to limit the control of land around Constantinople by aristocrats through their monastic foundations. As Manuel’s attempts to limit monastic property around Constantinople took place between 1158 and the 1160s, I suggest to readjust the date of redaction of the Life of Cyril to the end of 1150s. |
