More specifically, we explore the educational significance of Augustine’s nautical imagery within the broader tradition of philosophical travel in antiquity, demonstrating how these metaphors not only encapsulate his intellectual and spiritual journey but also anticipate his later theological developments – most notably, the eschatological vision of the City of God as the ultimate destination of the Christian pilgrimage. |
