Document Details : Title: Signa antiqua Subtitle: Zum Schicksal der antiken Bronzen aus der Sammlung Jacob de Wilde Author(s): FRANKEN, Norbert Journal: BABESCH Volume: 100 Date: 2025 Pages: 185-208 DOI: 10.2143/BAB.100.0.3294530 Abstract : This study focusses in particular on the ancient figurative bronzes in the collection of the Dutchman Jacob de Wilde (1645-1721) from Amsterdam, which was published in 1700 in a work richly illustrated with engravings. Today, unlike in the 17th and early 18th centuries, we are able to distinginsh the post-antique works, which comprise almost half of the collection, from the antique pieces. Apart from an early Greek mirror handle in Berlin, which has been known for some time, the author was able to rediscover four additional pieces that had been lost since auctioned in 1741: in the Cabinet des Médailles in Paris, on the Rijksmuseum van Oudheden in Leiden, and in the French art market. Even more than the early engravings, the rediscovered originals document the special diversity and quality of this highly important private collection from the Dutch Golden Age. |
