If true, this would overturn long-held assumptions about the Eastern Roman Empire and its army, requiring a fundamental reassessment of its political and military history. This review critically examines their arguments, highlighting gaps in their evidence and inconsistencies that challenge their conclusions. In defending a dating of the first decade of the 5th century, preferably 401/402, the reviewer aims to better clarify some of the source evidence involved, in particular to solve the mystery of the province of Macedonia Salutaris/Secunda. Dans une monographie récente, Anthony Kaldellis et Marion Kruse révisent radicalement la datation de la Notitia Dignitatum Orientis, la faisant passer d’environ 400 aux années 440. Si elle était avérée, cette thèse bouleverserait nos connaissances sur l’Empire romain d’Orient et son armée, et demanderait une réévaluation fondamentale de son histoire politique et militaire. La présente étude propose un examen critique de leurs arguments, en mettant en évidence certaines lacunes et incohérences de leur raisonnement. En défendant la datation du texte dans la première décennie du 5e siècle, de préférence 401/402, l’auteur de cet article cherche à mieux expliquer certaines données des sources, en particulier à résoudre le mystère de la province de Macédoine Salutaris/Secunda. |
