Document Details : Title: A Reconsideration of the Pinax and the Prooemium of Niketas Choniates' Panoplia Dogmatica Author(s): MAZZON, Ottavia Journal: Revue des Études Byzantines Volume: 83 Date: 2025 Pages: 139-179 DOI: 10.2143/REB.83.0.3294514 Abstract : After surveying the state of the scholarship on the text of Niketas Choniates’ Panoplia dogmatica, the essay focuses on the internal structure of the work through an analysis of the prooemium and the apparatus of paratexts as it appears in the main manuscript witnesses. The analysis shows that Choniates built the Panoplia dogmatica as an encyclopedic συλλογή on heresies by accumulating and ordering thematic dossiers in 27 books. These dossiers were put together through readings Choniates conducted directly or through the selection of excerpts from pre-existing florilegia. The passages were either transcribed verbatim or carefully reworked. The appendix offers a new critical edition of the pinax and the prooemium of Choniates’ Panoplia dogmatica with an essential apparatus of notes. Après avoir fait le point sur l’état des études sur le texte de la Panoplia dogmatica de Nikètas Choniatès, l’article se concentre sur la structure interne de l’oeuvre à travers une analyse du prooemium et de l’appareil paratextuel tel qu’il est transmis par les principaux témoins manuscrits. L’analyse montre que Choniatès construit la Panoplia dogmatica comme une συλλογή encyclopédique sur les hérésies en accumulant et en ordonnant des dossiers thématiques dans 27 livres. Ces dossiers sont formés à partir de lectures que Choniatès effectua directement ou par la sélection d’extraits de florilèges préexistants. Les passages ont été soit transcrits mot pour mot, soit soigneusement retravaillés. L’annexe propose une nouvelle édition critique des textes du pinax et du prooemium de la Panoplia dogmatica de Choniatès avec une série de notes concises. |
